It’s curious how little of the story is new, compared with the former film. Gladiator-slave in Rome, fighting to stay alive but also to prove a point: that Rome just ain’t what it used to be.

Bloated, overloaded script, but gorgeous sets an action. They were right to oversize the sets and create a magnificent, overpowering Rome. They were wrong to oversize the script and wind up with a convoluted, overcrowded story. But the movie is still worth seeing for the epic scenes and action. Hollywood should make more of these.
