What to Know

Critics Consensus

Original Sin cares less about injecting fresh blood than reviving a tried-and-true formula, making for a prequel that's just solid enough to scratch the Dexter itch with a scalpel.

Lauren Sarner New York Post “Dexter: Original Sin” isn’t unwatchable. It’s filled with entertaining performances, but the story feels like it’s beating a dead horse, rather than offering up an exciting prequel that has a compelling reason to exist. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) Turns out there’s still blood -- just a few drops -- to be squeezed from everyone’s favourite vigilante serial killer. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Alison Herman Variety Original Sin doesn’t draw any new life from a piece of IP that’s now old enough to vote. It does, however, represent the profit-chasing retrospection that’s devouring culture from the inside out like a termite infestation. Dec 16, 2024 Full Review Alex Maidy JoBlo's Movie Network The fact that this series has flashbacks is even more ridiculous than the hair Patrick Gibson sports in the first episode. Rated: 6/10 Jan 2, 2025 Full Review Marty Brown Common Sense Media Dexter's tale is quickly becoming the most overtold origin story after Batman. Rated: 2/5 Dec 30, 2024 Full Review Joel Keller Decider While we’re not convinced that Dexter: Original Sin will be as compelling as the early years of the original series, we’re hoping that the new cast develops their own chemistry instead of trying to imitate the dynamic of the original show’s cast. Joe D its a fun watch but the problem is that the casting in the original was so good that the best the prequel is to have everyone doing impressions of the original actors except for the best actors of the bunch Harry (slater) and Tanya (Gellar) The other actors needed to update the characters and not just imitate the original actors. you keep watching it hoping that writers will come up with something original Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Corey S Dexter is back. Critics complain too much don't believe what they say too many prequels cast actors that can't portray the original characters. These actors either got taught by the original cast or watched Dexter on repeat. It's tried and true to everything Dexter it feels amazing to step into my Miama Metro. There is so much attention to detail not to step on the incredible mythology that is Dexter. I can't wait for Dexter Resurrection and really would like to see a Season 2 of Original Sin. Dex is back.. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Alan P As a hard-core Dexter fan, I was extremely skeptical about this show. I didn't even develop hopes for it, because I didn't know what it would turn out to be. But oh boy was I wrong. It is so faithful to the rest of the series and is really well thought out. The casting is INCREDIBLE, the storyline is really good, the comedic moments are on point, and the bloody aspect of it all wasn't left off. I simply love it!!!! It's a fresh take on Dexter's past, and a really good one at that! Amazing. I love everything about it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Y Y I think Dexter original sin is good is not that cheese in is funny I am happy about this show hopefully one season maybe 15 episodes be good same actors that's good at least right Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Christopher K As a huge fan of the original Dexter series, this one hits the right spots. I'm not here, like others, to try and spot every single detail that may or may not match with the original series. It simply is just great to watch. You can complain that Deb is annoying or Harry isn't the same Harry but you are completely missing how excellent the storyline is. Plus we should be so fortunate to have new Dexter material. If you don't like it then move on with your life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Richard E Perhaps for more nostalgic reasons than rating for original content, I was thrilled with the casting which has nailed the original characters right down to Masuka's laugh.
