What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shifting Gears has a formidable pair of sitcom stars in Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, but flavorless characters and flat jokes keep their new comedic vehicle stuck in neutral.

Lisa Weidenfeld Boston Globe Tim Allen can be funny, but he needs better material than this. There’s also an eye-rolling tendency to make him the hero. Jan 10, 2025 Full Review Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Allen and Dennings do quickly strike a satisfying mix of antagonism and affection. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Cristina Escobar RogerEbert.com “Shifting Gears” works because Allen and Dennings are believable as an estranged father-daughter pair trying to work it out. Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Ana Dumaraog Screen Rant Tim Allen returns to ABC with a new sitcom. For those who missed him, Shifting Gears is a good show but it needs more work for other viewers. Rated: 5/10 Jan 16, 2025 Full Review Randy Dankievitch Processed Media However, Shifting Gears is saddled by some incredibly rigid, unfunny writing, never allowing any of its characters to be much else than funnels for more Allen-centric punchlines, a conceit that wears quite thin by the end of the first episode. Rated: D Jan 9, 2025 Full Review Joel Keller Decider It’s a cast full of comedy and sitcom veterans who are being given the thinnest of character and material to try to make funny. Dan W I think this show has potential. Seann William Scott is great as he was in the short-lived "Welcome to Flatch" and the premise is solid. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Rick Y I absolutely love Tim Allen but the writers definitely need improving! Jokes are not very good and what kills me is the darn "LAUGH TRACK"!!!! It laughs Way too much and at nothing even funny??? Takes away my enjoyment of watching... Also do not like the Grandson. Terrible Actor and not funny. With a lot of tweaking, they might be able to make this work. Not as it is right now... I was ready to turn it off. Please fix it! Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Nickolas J Yikes. It feels like recycled old lazy jokes at every turn. Tim Allen again playing Tim Allen which is funny if your sense of humor revolves around being a lazy selfish moron who drinks his weight in Busch light every other week. I know it's hard to make something origin these days but regressing to Home Improvement's thrown out jokes is pathetic. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review John L I love Tim Allen however, this is poorly written, poorly acted except for Tim. Kat is just as unfunny as she was in the dumb "Two Broke Girls". And please, please, please stop with the ridiculous laugh tracks. That's enough to turn you off more than the show itself. Please stop telling us when we should be laughing. That is so antiquated and diminishes whatever quality there is in the show. I am surprised that Tim is okay with the quality of the show. I will give it a chance but the first episode was dismal. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Bentley P So Far It’s A Great Show But A Couple Cliches But Kat Dennings Acting Is Not That Good Unlike Her Usual Jobs Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Steffan G Another perfect Tim Allen sitcom funny but heartwarming. Great cast 2 episodes in cant wait for more Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Read all reviews
