What to Know

Critics Consensus

Depicting Gotham through bone-breaking punches rather than popping onomatopoeia, The Penguin is a grounded crime saga given gravitas by Colin Farrell and a scene-stealing Cristin Milioti.

Kelly Lawler USA Today It's a fully realized story all on its own, which is what every TV show should be, spinoff or not. Rated: 3/4 Oct 2, 2024 Full Review Wenlei Ma The Nightly (AU) Craig Zobel has a strong grasp of The Penguin’s tone, keeping it shadowy but not grim where the characters’ psychic wounds drive all their choices and the action. Sep 25, 2024 Full Review Mike Hale New York Times "The Penguin” feels mechanical and recycled, constructed rather than imagined. Mob-movie clichés about honor and service are recited in lifeless dialogue and then recited again; the action often undercuts them but not in any witty or exciting way. Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Tatat Bunnag Bangkok Post With its noir-inspired aesthetic and sharp storytelling, The Penguin is a darkly compelling addition to the DC Universe. Dec 23, 2024 Full Review Frank Tremain Junkee There’s so much nuance to Colin Farrell’s character that it’s unsurprisingly touted as one of the best on-screen portrayals from Batman Rogues Gallery. Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Jonathan Garcia Dynamic Duel Podcast Outstanding performances and an epic, brutal storyline make the limited series a crime thriller of the highest caliber and a masterpiece within the genre. Aiven K Penguin is a gripping criminal drama that showcases Colin Farrell in a standout role. His portrayal of the complex lead character adds layers of intensity and depth to the show. The writing is sharp, with a dark, suspenseful atmosphere that keeps you hooked from start to finish. With its intriguing plot and stellar performances, Penguin is a must-watch for fans of crime dramas. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Lasse L The Penguin is a good-looking show, competently written, and well-acted. However, it only has a few tricks up its sleeve, and I craved more originality. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/19/25 Full Review Alexander S The Penguin is meticulously crafted as a gangster crime series that seamlessly incorporates elements from classic mobster films, such as running the city, wielding power, and internal conflicts among mobster families. Colin Farrell delivers an extraordinary performance as the unrecognizable Penguin, while Cristin Milioti steals the show with her knockout portrayal of Sofia Falcone. Grading: A Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/25 Full Review Reeve L Gut-wrenching, macabre and suspenseful. A tour de force in acting, writing and screenwriting. Combining the fallout of The Batman (2022) and the feel of mob shows is a killer combo. A must-watch. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/25 Full Review Moody C It’s a nice breezy 1 season 8 episodes which can be watched in 2 days so it got that going for it but problem with origin story is you know title character can’t be killed so makes it less interesting given low stakes. The actress villain is amazing and robbed of Emmy and Golden Globe. Farrell is good but felt a bit of a caricature. Makeup is amazing but you wonder why they don’t just hire a fat guy that looks like that instead of casting someone who looks so far different but rhetorical question, they wanted a name actor. The kid looks so out of place and you wonder why a high level criminal like Penguin wud want anything to do with him so kid’s fate at the end is fitting. It’s very standard crime story fare but they made it a bit different with the psychoanalysis of Penguin and his mom at the end which is intriguing but short lived. It wasn’t really ending I hope for but it’s called The Penguin so really no surprise. Lastly, bat signal at the end is cringeworthy and reminded me of TDKR when the cop said his given name is Robin. Eyes rolling. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Christian H A continuation of the Gotham we’ve always wanted and loved. Mat Reeves clearly understands DC Comics and the Batman history incredibly well, leading to an incredibly detailed and thrilling series. Colin Farrel as the Penguin is perfect casting, and plays the Penguin so well that it is reminiscent of the Batman Animated Series - which depicted Batman’s Rogue Gallery so well. This is the DC I know. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/25 Full Review Read all reviews
